慢性阻塞性肺病及肺癌患者都有逐年增加的趋势，而吸烟与这两种疾病有着密不可分的关系。目前FEV1∕FEC数值0.7是普遍用于诊断COPD与否的标准，然而对于进行过胸腔手术的肺癌患者而言，此数值无法确实反映COPD与整体存活间关系，因此发表于《Respiratory Investigation》的最新研究认为以肺量计评估此患者的呼吸道阻塞状况需做调整。试验中，699位进行胸腔手术的肺癌病患接受肺量计评估，纪录其肺功能变数、肺癌组织型态及相关合并症，并将患者分为低于及高于FEV1∕FEC正常值下限( Lower limit of normal, LLN)两组。试验结果显示，曾吸烟的男性低于LLN比例明显偏高，而低于LLN者其IC∕TLC (Inspiratory capacity/Total lung capacity)、DLCO (Diffusion capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide)、无病存活期及整体存活数值也明显较差，因此研究人员认为FEV1∕FEC的LLN对于整体存活的判断，优于以固定数值0.7的判断方式。研究刊登在《Respiratory Investigation》的网页
