《The Lancet》发表的一项新的研究发现，益生菌无法保护28~32周出生之早产儿免于严重并发症之威胁，如：坏死性肠炎、败血症、死亡。这项研究成果挑战了先前的研究，之前认为来自于某些食物或营养补充品的益生菌，有潜在的保护效益。这项研究包括超过1,300名早产儿(28~32周出生)，给予这些早产儿短双歧杆菌(Bifidobacterium breve) 或安慰剂；使用这种益生菌是因为先前的研究报告认为这种益生菌有一些益处。研究结果发现，益生菌组有11%发生败血症、安慰剂组有12%；益生菌组有9%发生坏死性肠炎、安慰剂组有10%；益生菌组有8%出院前死亡、安慰剂组有9%；但都没有与使用益生菌相关的安全性问题。这项研究并不支持让早产儿常规使用益生菌。
先前的大型研究发现益生菌可以降低早产儿(28~32周出生) 发生坏死性肠炎，可能是当时的研究中早产儿并发症发生率偏低，且研究中益生菌菌种不一所致。
