《The Lancet Psychiatry》刊登英国华威大学(Warwick University)与美国杜克大学的共同研究，从英国的Avon Longitudinal Study和美国Great Smoky Mountains Study分析了约5,500位儿童，分析8周大到8.6岁的儿童遭受身体或心灵虐待案件的心理评估，以及8,10,13岁学童遭到同侪霸凌后的心理状态，从9岁到16岁中间每年和家长一起进行学童心理评估，研究发现曾受校园霸凌的孩子在18岁时出现焦虑的倾向较受虐者高出五倍，且忧郁与自伤风险高了近两倍。作者认为，受霸凌的孩子，多半会因家长与老师的轻视造成长久伤害，认为自己才是有问题的人，精神上受到的影响也因此较受虐者更深远。研究刊登在《The Lancet Psychiatry》第2卷第6期第524-531页：
